Who is Hapa? What is Hapa? Where is Hapa?

How do we define the in-between?

Test Alliance Hapa Project Photo - Brigid

Questioning the normative parameters of race and identity in America, artist Kip Fulbeck traveled around the U.S., documenting multiracial/multiethnic individuals of Asian/Pacific Islander descent in America. Fulbeck started The Hapa Project as a forum for Hapas to answer the question "What are you?" in their own words and be photographed. The results of Fulbeck's exploration led to a book, Part Asian, 100% Asian, a moving demonstration of self-expression that affirms personal identity and challenges social identities.

In April 2010, The Field Museum will launch kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa, an exhibition of Fulbeck's photographs, accompanied by the sometimes frank and funny hand-written comments subjects wrote in response to the question, "What are you?" In addition, the Alliance has acquired Fulbeck's permission to document identity - in all its shapes, forms, colors, creeds, and more - as it manifests itself in the rich diversity of Chicago.
