Accessibility and Inclusion: In Conversation with Culture, presented by Multilingual Connections – Mar 22 @ 10AM

Speakers Carlos Hevia of Multilingual Connections and Christena Gunther of the Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium will present on the ways in which cultural institutions can think expansively about what it means to be accessible and inclusive to diverse populations. Karin Moen Abercrombie of the Swedish American Museum will moderate.

 American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation and automatic captions will be provided. Thank you to Interprenet for their generous donation of interpretation services.

Carlos Hevia, Director of Business Development, Multilingual Connections
Carlos Hevia graduated from Auburn University with a degree in International Business (Marketing) and has over 20 years of experience in international sales & marketing and strategic planning. He has experience in many markets including medical devices, information technologies, chemical products, and language services and has worked with both government agencies and private industry. Through his work and life, Carlos has experienced first hand the power of language to connect people and ideas. Through his daily work, he is able to help people across the globe to access the services, information, and other resources they need to improve their lives.

Christena Gunther, (She/her/hers) Founder and President,  Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium
Bringing Chicago together around the intersection of disability and the arts was Christena’s main aim when she started the Chicago Chicago Accessibility Consortium (CCAC) in 2013. Having over a decade of experience in cultural accessibility from a variety of cultural organizations, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lincoln Center, she currently serves as Assistant Director of Disability Services at Adler University. Thanks to her brother who has Down syndrome, cultural accessibility became her passion as they visited museums and plays together. Christena speaks internationally about cultural accessibility, especially the importance of establishing a local access knowledge network in one’s own community.

Karin Moen Abercrombie, Executive Director, Swedish American Museum
Karin Moen Abercrombie has served as the Executive Director of the Swedish American Museum since 2006. During her time as Executive Director, the Museum has strengthened its position in the community and its work with the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, SACC, SWEA, and many other Swedish-American local organizations. Ms. Abercrombie serves on the board of the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce as Treasurer, is an honorary board member of the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce Chicago, and is past board member of Swedish Council of America, SWEA Chicago, and Chicago Cultural Alliance. Ms. Abercrombie was appointed Honorary Consul of Sweden in Chicago in 2019.
